depends on how long you have been together. A short time, maybe a cd or a shirt. A long time, get him something you know he will like. Such as if he is into sports, maybe a hat or a sports jersey. Things like that.
Is it his money?
If so you might want to respect his wishes.
Either way, the truth of the matter is that he probably REALLY wants this thing and is trying to “do the right thing.” Buy it for him and save the receipt. If he is TRULY worried you can always return it later.
I’m not sure if you are referring to a traditional Wedding Anniversary or if this is a celebration of a personal achievement, but if we are talking a traditional wedding anniversary, there are etiquette guides to suggest at least the kind of gift you should get. For example, if this is your first anniversary, then the gift should be something made of paper according to Emily Post, American author, journalist and social expert whose book, “Emily Post’s Etiquette” has been considered the final word on matters of etiquette and social graces for years. Typically the gift would be something like your first Family Bible which you can use to record the family history, birth dates, death dates, children’s birth dates, and over the years, you develop your own family history.
Another possibility is a collection of the sheet music and lyrics of some of his favorite songs put together into a folio. Another popular gift is a Scrapbook with has the beginnings of a collection of photos and memorabilia from your time together. Anyway, you get the idea.
If you are talking about something other than a wedding anniversary, then your idea about the dvd player would be a great idea, especially since I can tell from what you say that he really wants it, but just doesn’t want to spend the money on it for something for himself.
Here’s something creative that will be appreciated and you will have fun doing:
Make up a crossword puzzle and have all the hints be personal inside moments and jokes that only you two would know about. Put it on a poster board and add some clipart and some pictures to it!
The crossword puzzle could be time consuming and a bit frustrating … you could do the same idea with a WORDSEARCH or WORDFIND puzzle.
Put your computer skills to work! Use Excel, get clipart from Yahoo Images Search, copy them, and reformat them, use a gluestick to put on posterboard.
Use graph paper, and pictures from magazines if you are not as good on the computer, and it will give it a homemade feeling.
